What do the experts say?

Design

Although the XOLO QC800 seems to be made of a tough plastic material, the build quality and design fail to impress. The front screen is bordered by a white bezel and is a scratch and fingerprint magnet so you have to invest in a screen guard. The back has a grainy dotted textured surface meant to provide better grip but ends up feeling unpleasant to touch so you additionally might have to spend on a cover.

The device seems to be a tad heavier (480 g) as compared to other 8” tabs (Apple iPad Mini – nonetheless cheaper. Also, thickness is also above average when compared to other tabs.

What’s surprising is that all the buttons and slots – Volume rocker, Power switch, Mirco SD card slot, SIM card slot, and Headphone jack are all located on the top of the device, while its two speakers are placed near the base of the tablet, which in our opinion seems debatable.

Display

The display is the one thing that is quite impressive in this tab given low price. The 8” screen comes with a resolution of 1024×768 pixels and a pixel density of 160ppi making the display crystal clear and pretty sharp. It also comes with IPS technology enabling great viewing angles (>170 degrees).

The screen is remarkably bright allowing visibility under direct sunlight and color reproduction is also good.

Camera

This is one feature that below par but you can’t complain much considering the price. The tab comes with a 2 Megapixel rear camera that includes features such as auto-focus, geo-tagging, touch focus and face detection. While this produces good pictures if used outdoor, pictures taken indoors or in low light pictures are of very poor quality.

The front VGA camera is of 0.3 Megapixels and serves to make video calls or have a video chat or take an occasional selfie. The images often have a lot of noise in them.

Video recording is just so-so and nothing to talk home about.

Sound

Speakers for this tab are a major disappointment. Sound quality is quite poor requiring you to use headphones while watching movies and loudness is just average. Microphone is also of poor quality.

Connectivity

It has the normal connectivity features like Micro USB 2.0, a 3.5 mm Audio jack, Bluetooth v3, Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n), 3G (7.6 Mbps HSDPA; 5.76 Mbps HSUPA, HSPA+) and inbuilt SIM slot that supports voice calls and data connectivity. Cellular networks supported are 2G (GSM 850, 900, 1800, 1900) and 3G (UMTS 2100).

Performance

XOLO QC800 is powered by a 1.2GHz Quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 8225Q processor along with 1GB of RAM and Adreno 203 GPU, 350 MHz. In general, Qualcomm processors are known to give better performance than Mediatek processors, but the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8225Q is a Cortex A5 processor, an architecture developed in 2008, much outdated that the current Mediatek Quadcore MTK MT6588 / MTK6589 processors.

Again if you compare the Adreno 203 GPU with SGX544 GPU that comes along with Mediatek Quad Core processors, you can see that the latter gives better performance. Well despite the lag in architecture, overall performance of the tablet is very good. It shows superior graphics performance with games like Temple Run, Subway Surfer etc.

Video playback is smooth and flawless and application load without delay so multi-tasking won’t cause problems. Web browsing also does not show any specific lags.

The capacitive touchscreen is very responsive and supports 10-finger multi-touch function. The viewing angles and display are also awesome, all thanks to the IPS display that it sports.

Internal storage capacity is just 4 GB which leaves just 2 GB for users to store their data. Therefore, supplementing the device with a Micro SD card becomes quite unavoidable. Good news is that it offers expandable storage capacity of up to 32 GB.

The most appealing feature in this tab is the powerful 4000 mAh battery that will boasts of an outstanding standby time of 360 hrs, web browsing time of 4 hrs and a talk time of 12 hrs on 3G. Not bad at all, we say.

The OS is a basic almost stock Android version of the Jelly Bean making the UI light on the processor and hence resulting in better performance but leaving the customers in wait for an update. The power saving app from XOLO apps is quite commendable while the other preinstalled apps are pretty much standard – mail, Google search, navigation and Google Play store.

Our Verdict

XOLO has entered the tablet market and is all ready to compete with the big players like Samsung, Sony, and Apple etc. While it cannot brag about top-end features like its rivals, it does bring to the table a host of quality features, powerful hardware specs and on the whole a laudable performance.

The price is pretty decent for what it offers but there are other tabs that can give the XOLO QC800 some competition like Google Nexus 7 and Samsung Galaxy Tab2, they may be priced higher but seem to offer a better combination of features.

However, if you want a budget tab without too many frills, the QC800 could very well be the one for you. If you have already bought one, let us know your thoughts.
